Athlete of the Month!
This months spotlight goes out to our morning member Gustavo Melendez!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Gustavo joined us last July with his brother in law Rafael.
Not only was Gustavo new to CrossFit, but he was new to exercise in general. He was nervous about starting because of all the cardio and weightlifting. He went through our On-Ramp program with Coach Kimberly which helped him feel ready to jump into his first class.
To get to know Gustavo we asked him to share a unique fact. This is What he said, “Just this month I completed a year of residency in Arizona. My wife and daughters and I came from Venezuela seeking greater security and a better future for all of them.
Approximately 20 years ago in Venezuela I had a motorcycle accident and had open fractures in both arms and a fissure in my pelvis. My recovery was very slow and I lost a lot of mobility and strength in my arms and legs. In addition to that 1 year ago I had Bariatric Surgery, (Gastric Bypass) that made me lose more than 100lbs after the operation.”
Since joining CrossFit Gustavo has noticed a huge change in his physical and mental health. Due to the operation Gustavo lost weight and muscle mass very quickly. Doing CrossFit has managed to minimize the loss of muscle mass. Mentally CrossFit distracts you, improves your mood and relieves stress while taking class.
He also says,”What I appreciate the most is that I created a new habit for me that I know will be a part of my whole life from now on.”
Outside of the gym Gustavo says, “1 year ago I couldn’t even bend down to pick up some keys and if I managed to do it I would get tired very quickly. Now, little by little I feel that I am better at mobility, resistance training, and strength. All this makes me active day by day.”
We asked Gustavo what type of advice would he give someone who is thinking about starting their fitness journey. “Always think of you. You have to have an active life and fight everyday to be a better version of yourself. CrossFit is not just about exercising, but about being part of a big family that has a common goal and that is: to have and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many thanks to Coach Amy, Coach Andrew and my brother in law for being so patient, explaining to me every day how to do the exercises, and always watching out for injuries in the learning process.”
Gustavo, you are killing it in the gym with your consistency! Keep up the great work!

Athletes Corner
We had such a great turn out for Murph! Everyone did such a great job we love seeing our long term members crush Murph each year and our newer members trying it for the first time!
We had a weightlifting clinic with Jimmy Marquez this last month!
This was such a great clinic we learned so much!
Jimmy went over Proper back squat form - Setting the bar on your traps, and bringing your ribs down, make sure your weight is in the middle of your feet and not your heels. When you’re in the right position you want to be able to not hold the bar while performing a back squat.
Getting the bar over head - He touched on proper hand placement on the bar. How we should be using our lats to bring the bar over head not our shoulders. Jimmy also gave us some great pointers on how to bring the bar back to your shoulders smoothly.
How to load your hips properly at the beginning of a snatch. When you get down into the hole opening your knees a bit and putting that load into your hips before you start the movement. We want our hips to be loaded so we take the movement out of our back and use our hips and legs for power
