074. 7 Areas For CrossFit Beginners to Focus On
If I was to start CrossFit over again I would have a different focus.
When I started training in CrossFit in 2012 I walked into CrossFit Preferred and I was thrown into class. We do it way different now with an introductory class and 4 foundations classes.
I was taught to hit every workout as hard as I could. I am now convinced that is not the answer. If I could send my younger self a note these are the 7 areas I would tell myself to focus on:
#1 Start With Foundations and Learn the Basics
Many of us are going to have bad form on the basics when we first start. If you do not learn the proper way to lift or learn any of the other things we do in CrossFit you are not going to magically get better.
When we start with learning form the wrong way it creates bad habits that are hard to break. Take advantage of our coaches and ask for help with any lift or movement you are struggling with or if you do not feel confident. They will help you when you are in class but sometimes it will take some extra coaching. Each coach at CrossFit Preferred wants to help you succeed!
#2 Focus on You, Your Form and Not the Weight
Tiersa teaches all our new members
Form & technique > intensity > then weight
Until you are lifting with proper technique we do not recommend adding a bunch of weight.
I learned this early on in my first couple weeks of joining CrossFit. I deadlifted way to heavy and hurt my low back.
Remember that EGO IS THE ENEMY and will not help you improve.
Trying to lift a weight that someone else is doing is not going to help you improve. There will come a time that you will improve and you will be able to do what others are doing and compete with them.
When Tiersa first started she was not even close to doing what others were doing in the gym. I constantly watch her focus on improving movements or working on improving. She is currently working on learning a ring muscle up. She does not have the strength yet so she is working on improving her strength in her lats. Andy has helped her to know what to focus on. Andy is a master at gymnastics and gymnastics coaching.
#3 Come Early, Stay Late or Go To Open Gym
We run classes at CrossFit Preferred but you are always welcome to come in early, stay late or come to open gym.
Practicing one movement at a time will help you improve. Focus on what you feel the least confident on and work towards improving. Once you master that choose your next weakness or ask a coach what they would recommend for you.
I have been staying after and working on my flexibility/mobility. I have been following GoWod and it has helped me a ton! I started focusing on this at the beginning of the month when I gave everyone a challenge. I trust those that are focusing on flexibility are seeing a huge difference too!
#4 Know Your Numbers/Weights
I will hear members of the gym say that they do not track their workouts or strength numbers because they are not competitive. It is totally okay if you are not competitive with others but I highly recommend being competitive with yourself!
We use a program called Wodify that we see as a huge advantage for our members. It allows you to track weights for each lifts and record your numbers, times and reps for the workouts.
When you know what you did for previous lifts or workouts it helps you to know how to attack each workout and to hit the right intensity and stimulus.
#5 Practice Intensity
If you do not push yourself you will not get the full benefit of CrossFit. In the beginning If I could do it all over again I would learn to not kill myself in the first part of every workout. I would start with a pace I could handle and then when the last 60 seconds or reps of a workout comes I would push myself as hard as I could that last minute. As times goes on you can push it to 90 seconds and so on.
Intensity is a skill that can be earned and improved over time. Focus on this and you will see a huge difference in your workouts!
#6 Focus on Flexibility/Mobility!
For many years I have focused on working out longer and neglecting my flexibility and mobility. It is a bad habit I created. I have found that if I create 5-10 minutes to stretch and work on mobility after my workouts daily I feel way better for the next workout. It helps me with my lifts and all areas of my workouts.
I am now making this a huge part of my daily workouts and I am noticing a huge difference.
I highly recommend GoWOD, RomWod or The Ready State. For me personally I have found GoWOD to be great for me. It is based off where I am at and tailors my mobility and stretching to help me personally improve.
#7 Have Fun!
Get to know the other members of the gym and create friendships. When we go through hard things and have fun together we create great friendships!
