3 Signs You Might Not Be Eating Enough

Set your calendars for Tiersa and Meghan’s Free Nutrition Talk, Monday June 28th @ 7:00pm!
This month’s talk is going to be on 3 signs you might not be eating enough. We are so excited to do this one because as nutrition coaches this is one of the biggest issues we see with our clients.
We’ll teach you about “energy balance” and we’ll help you figure out what hunger cues your body might be giving you that you’re missing. 😀👏🏻

Member Spotlight

This months spotlight is one of our favorite CrossFit couples Amy and Jason Hunsaker! 👏🏻

They consistently hit up either Open gym or our 5p class.

The Hunsaker’s have been doing CrossFit together for 5 years! They started back in 2016 when Coach Amy invited them to join a class. They fell in love❤️with the coaches and the environment, had so much fun and never looked back! 💪🏻

Jason and Amy have been married for 23 years! They are both in law enforcement, have 3 grown kids and 4 beautiful pups! They also share a love for frosting! 🐶👮🏼‍♀️👮‍♂️🧁
Since starting Crossfit they have noticed how much stronger 💪🏻they have become, physically and mentally. CrossFit really shoves you outside your comfort zone and forces you to confront your perceived limitations.” Blowing past what you thought you could do and on to tougher challenges inevitably instaillsa really cool confidence in you that you can handle all the hard stuff life will throw your way.”
At 48 and 44 years old, they are the fittest they have ever been and that’s allowed them to do so many things in and out of the gym! From hiking Humphrey’s to helping out folks move to keeping up with their rowdy Huskies to feeling fully prepared for whatever physical demands work might require. CrossFit has given them an incredible amount of freedom to “do”.
We asked Jason and Amy what type of advice they would give to someone who is thinking about starting their fitness journey. This is what they said….. “Just start. Even if you’re not quite sure what you’re doing, even if you goof up more often than you win: just move the needle. Life will always present obstacles to your goals, but baby steps are better than no steps at all. We’re incredibly fortunate to have a staff of really cool experts within our own gym to help you over the rough spots. There’s also no finish line to this fitness thing, so have some freaking fun along the way!”
Hunsaker’s, we love having you both as a part of our gym family!

074. 7 Areas For CrossFit Beginners to Focus On

If I was to start CrossFit over again I would have a different focus.

When I started training in CrossFit in 2012 I walked into CrossFit Preferred and I was thrown into class. We do it way different now with an introductory class and 4 foundations classes.

I was taught to hit every workout as hard as I could. I am   now convinced that is not the answer. If I could send my younger self a note these are the 7 areas I would tell myself to focus on:

#1 Start With Foundations and Learn the Basics

Many of us are going to have bad form on the basics when we first start. If you do not learn the proper way to lift or learn any of the other things we do in CrossFit you are not going to magically get better.

When we start with learning form the wrong way it creates bad habits that are hard to break. Take advantage of our coaches and ask for help with any lift or movement you are struggling with or if you do not feel confident. They will help you when you are in class but sometimes it will take some extra coaching. Each coach at CrossFit Preferred wants to help you succeed!

#2 Focus on You, Your Form and Not the Weight

Tiersa teaches all our new members

Form & technique > intensity > then weight

Until you are lifting with proper technique we do not recommend adding a bunch of weight.

I learned this early on in my first couple weeks of joining CrossFit. I deadlifted way to heavy and hurt my low back.

Remember that EGO IS THE ENEMY and will not help you improve.

Trying to lift a weight that someone else is doing is not going to help you improve. There will come a time that you will improve and you will be able to do what others are doing and compete with them.

When Tiersa first started she was not even close to doing what others were doing in the gym. I constantly watch her focus on improving movements or working on improving. She is currently working on learning a ring muscle up. She does not have the strength yet so she is working on improving her strength in her lats. Andy has helped her to know what to focus on. Andy is a master at gymnastics and gymnastics coaching.

#3 Come Early, Stay Late or Go To Open Gym

We run classes at CrossFit Preferred but you are always welcome to come in early, stay late or come to open gym.

Practicing one movement at a time will help you improve. Focus on what you feel the least confident on and work towards improving. Once you master that choose your next weakness or ask a coach what they would recommend for you.

I have been staying after and working on my flexibility/mobility. I have been following GoWod and it has helped me a ton! I started focusing on this at the beginning of the month when I gave everyone a challenge. I trust those that are focusing on flexibility are seeing a huge difference too!

#4 Know Your Numbers/Weights

I will hear members of the gym say that they do not track their workouts or strength numbers because they are not competitive. It is totally okay if you are not competitive with others but I highly recommend being competitive with yourself!

We use a program called Wodify that we see as a huge advantage for our members. It allows you to track weights for each lifts and record your numbers, times and reps for the workouts.

When you know what you did for previous lifts or workouts it helps you to know how to attack each workout and to hit the right intensity and stimulus.

#5  Practice Intensity

If you do not push yourself you will not get the full benefit of CrossFit. In the beginning If I could do it all over again I would learn to not kill myself in the first part of every workout. I would start with a pace I could handle and then when the last 60 seconds or reps of a workout comes I would push myself as hard as I could that last minute. As times goes on you can push it to 90 seconds and so on.

Intensity is a skill that can be earned and improved over time. Focus on this and you will see a huge difference in your workouts!

#6 Focus on Flexibility/Mobility!

For many years I have focused on working out longer and neglecting my flexibility and mobility. It is a bad habit I created. I have found that if I create 5-10 minutes to stretch and work on mobility after my workouts daily I feel way better for the next workout. It helps me with my lifts and all areas of my workouts.

I am now making this a huge part of my daily workouts and I am noticing a huge difference.

I highly recommend GoWOD, RomWod or The Ready State. For me personally I have found GoWOD to be great for me. It is based off where I am at and tailors my mobility and stretching to help me personally improve.

#7 Have Fun!

Get to know the other members of the gym and create friendships. When we go through hard things and have fun together we create great friendships!
