5 Reasons Why The CrossFit Open is for Everybody
Three years ago I participated in the CrossFit Open for the first time. When I heard about it I thought to myself I am not as strong as everybody else at the gym what is the point in competing. I did it anyway with a little encouragement from friends at the gym and I am so glad that I did! I am still not as strong as others at the gym but I am improving more each day. The CrossFit Open and CrossFit in general for us mortals is not about who is the strongest. It is about becoming better everyday. CrossFit is very true to life if you want something in life you have to work at it everyday. It does not just happen. This is one of the reasons I love CrossFit! For me the work I put in at the gym transfers to life and reminds me that if I put forth the effort in this area of my life I can transfer it to other areas of my life including family, work, Spiritual areas and anything else that I want to improve.
Here is a little background on the how the workouts are set up. The workouts each year are based off the year that you are in so for 2016 the workouts were called 16.1, 16.2, 16.3, 16.4 and 16.5. This year they will be called 17.1, 17.2, 17.3, 17.4 and 17.5. Each workout tells you the year and the week you are on. Each Thursday around 5:00pm for 5 weeks Dave Castro (Retired Navy Seal and CrossFit Headquarters man behind the CrossFit Games) announces what each workout will be each week. He has a ton of character and is very entertaining to say the least!
Last year there was a workout that was extremely humbling to me. It was 16.5. (The last week of the Open) It was 21-18-15-12-9-6-3 reps for time of: Thrusters (95 Pounds Men, 65 Pounds Women) and Burpees! What a combination! I had decided that I was going to do the RX version of the CrossFit Open for 2016. This is not easy for anybody. The nice thing about the CrossFit Open is that CrossFit has a scaled version and a RX version. CrossFit make the workouts work for everybody regardless of what your fitness level is at this time. They have RX, Scaled, Masters, Scaled Masters, Teens and Scaled Teens.
We had decided as coaches that we were going to do the workout together in front of everybody. It was a Friday night and we had made it a party at the gym! The CrossFit Open gives us all a great reason to get together and cheer each other on and have a fun party! Lets just say that I was humbled during the workout! I tried my hardest to hang with everybody and struggled. Our coaches are great athletes and know how to push themselves to another level! At first I was a little embarrassed but I thought to myself I just need to keep pushing myself and doing my best. What I have learned in life and CrossFit is if we keep pushing through the hard things that come our way in life and in CrossFit that the hard times eventually end. I wanted this workout to end so I kept pushing! It ended up taking me 21 minutes and 3 seconds. I finished a couple minutes after everybody else.
5 Reasons Why The 2017 CrossFit Open Is For You!
5. YOU LEARN HOW TO PUSH YOURSELF
This is one of the reasons why I love the CrossFit Open and CrossFit. When you have a crowd at the gym cheering you on you push harder and learn how to push yourself to another level. You get to see what the top athletes can do at our gym and you get to see the professionals do the same workout across the world. These athletes are amazing to watch!
I hear people all the time say that I would never do this workout on my own. The community that we have at CrossFit Preferred is awesome! They are your teammates and want you to do your best!
4. YOU LEARN HOW TO COMPARE YOURSELF TO YOU
One of the things I have to continually remind myself is that competing is not all about comparing yourself to other people. For most of us there will always be somebody stronger, faster and better than you. Fitness is about becoming a little better than you were yesterday. Look for small gains and celebrate them.
3. YOU LEARN HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR WEAKNESSES
This last year we had a group of athletes at the gym that got to week 3 of the Open and found out that this week had Muscle Ups for the RX version of the workouts. A lot of people were freaked out and had made up their mind that they could not do this workout across the CrossFit community. At our gym we had so many people working so hard to figure out Muscle Ups and so many people did! It was so awesome to see them get these and they were so proud of themselves!
2. IT BRINGS THE MORNING CLASSES AND THE EVENING CLASSES TOGETHER!
One of the best parts about the Open is that we come together as a gym and get to know each other better. It creates a great bond between everybody doing this together. We grow together when we do hard things together.
- IT IS SO MUCH FUN!
My favorite part about the Open is the fun we have together! You get to cheer your gym family on and it is a blast! Invite your families to come see you do these workouts. We designate one time per week as a time we all get together and we make it a party with food and a great time together!
