How to balance fitness and life

By: 0

About 5 years ago when I was 35 years old I realized that I was extremely out of balance in my life. I had three kids at the time (we have 5 now!) and I was working insane hours in the car business, racing Ironman and Xterra Triathlon races and being a Dad when I was around. I am not proud of this time in my life. I did not like who I was becoming. I was a workaholic and when I was not working I was training for races. I was not the best husband or father. I started to realize that I needed to really work on myself and become better for everyone around me in my life. I have found that if we work on improving ourselves first we become our best for everyone around us in our lives. We must first secure our oxygen mask first so we can help everybody around us.

I wrote down some areas that I wanted to improve in. The areas were family, Spirituality, education, fitness and work. Over time I have realized that if I want to get something done each day I have to get it done first thing in the morning. I have created a morning routine that I feel has helped me become better for everybody around me.

I start my morning out with prayer, scripture study, listening to something motivating or something that inspires me to be better. I listen to two conference talks from leaders of our church per day. I have listened from April of 1971 to April of 1985 so far (I listen on my way to CrossFit Preferred and on my way back), exercise (CrossFit and Running), a good healthy breakfast, time with our kids (I take them to school when school is in session), making my bed, meditation, write down my 3 most important things to get done each day and a podcast or book on my way to work. This is my recipe for a successful day!

I did not start out doing all of these things all at once. If I did it would have been extremely overwhelming. I started very small and have added a little to my routine each day.

What I want to focus on today is how we can improve and become a little better each day. The things that we do each day determine who we will become. The trick is to start with one area at a time that you want to improve.

Over the next several weeks I will be sharing why I have decided to work on these areas in my life and how it has helped me improve my life. My hope is that I will be able to help give you some ideas to help you find more balance and improve in different areas of your life. What is one area that you want to improve? What can you start doing today that will help you become your best self?!
